“Because…”

because my sex is powerful
I was taught not to flaunt it
but to be ashamed by it

because my sex is powerful
I was forced to keep it secret
by incestuous hands
that wandered underneath
my bedtime sheets

because my sex is powerful
I gave it away
to every chance that came

because my sex is powerful
I believed I earned a say
on where it went
manipulating situations
in honor of it

because my sex is powerful
I still cower
behind a complex
of monumental insecurity,
building a wall of bricks
around my heart
instead of the pillow soft kisses
I fool myself with
