“death penalty” by Rolland Vasin

BY ROLLAND VASIN aka VACHINE

sentence for warriors and their fathers God and country rushes by ears
deaf to danger of passage to unnamed graves the bugle sounds
admirals depend on strict compliance for retention of stars and white
toilet seats the bugle sounds
sailors expire in voids hollering for mamas who support boys
fallen to fires from faulty ordnance the bugle sounds
pilot’s neck crushes upon ejection through a canopy not blown
but missions must go on the bugle sounds
58912 chiseled names on a black granite wall the shade of darkness
in each family’s memory the bugle sounds
A murderer’s sentence to death row yields decades of solitary
daily meals, books, TV and letters from admirers no bugle sounds.
