“The Place” by Colin Dodds

BY COLIN DODDS

She sits on a windowsill in bra and panties
puts a fresh white cigarette between painted lips
blows kisses to the courtyard

She may not be beautiful
but she’s the only thing here
whose appeal survives beyond
the labyrinths of justification

She’s an event, a moment
And there’s no clear way
for any of us, even her,
to handle a moment

When she zips up her bag
and rolls it to the airport
this place becomes like the rest of the world—

just another place
whose buildings and people are ugly
but proliferate just the same
